Prologue
Julian and Marianne were feeling more than despondent after losing their jobs and home. Both were made redundant after the financial brokerage company they worked for went into liquidation and decided to walk away from their £1.5 million flat in London due to negative equity. Now, taking a few months off in the South of France to relax and search for something else to do. Although they were used to earning huge incomes working as currency traders, Julian wanted a complete change of career. However, Marianne dropped out of medical school to get into financial trading and actually enjoyed the buzz.
Then one day as they were strolling along, looking at all the stunning yachts in the Cannes marina, they met Kerry and her boyfriend Connor in a restaurant. Kerry started chatting with Marianne and after a while, were invited to a party on Connor’s motor yacht Seventh Heaven.
Chapter 1
The proposition
On arrival that evening, they were both stunned to find that Connor’s motor yacht was one of the largest in the marina. Kerry and Connor greeted them aboard as Connor hugged Marianne, shook Julian’s hand and told Kerry to give them a welcome drink then a tour of the boat. Julian was sure that Connor was attracted to Marianne by the way he kept staring at her as he was mingling and chatting with all his other guests.
Kerry also noticed him staring but she must have been used to him getting whatever he wanted, telling us he was a serial flirt and had lost count of how many times he brought a new girl into their bedroom for some threesome fun.
“So you don’t mind sharing him then…?” Marianne asked.
“What can I do, he’s mega rich and divorced his wife last year because she wouldn’t play.”
“So, how did you meet him…?” Marianne asked.
“Through a friend but he has quite a few girlfriends and I suppose I’m the flavour of the month…!”
“Oh My God, so you haven’t known him for long then…?”
“Not really, only a few months.”
“So, what exactly does he do then…?” Julian asked as they followed her up some steps to the next deck.
“I’m not allowed to say but he has some very influential friends and contacts in Columbia and Europe.”
“Sounds like he’s a drug baron or something…!” Julian said jokingly.
Kerry didn’t answer but quickly tried to change the subject by telling us the yacht was a 62 meter Lurrsen and Connor purchased it 2 years ago for 40 Million Euros. It had an immense Owner’s suite, a VIP suite and 4 additional staterooms. She also said that the owner’s suite was basically a two-story apartment that lies forward on the main and upper decks, incorporating sleeping, dressing and relaxation spaces, an office and an outdoor lounging area. The yacht had 14 full time crew and a range of 7700 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 13 knots.
Marianne was in awe at the luxurious lounge and cabins, telling Julian that, one day she wanted them to also become wealthy, so they could live and travel the world like Connor. More guests were still arriving and the yacht was now pumping with loud house music and about 35 guests now onboard. Kerry said she had to go find Connor and that she’d catch up with them later.
Wandering around, they realised that most of the guests were guys and that the girls were most likely very elegant hookers. Two of the crew were walking around in their smart uniforms with trays of champagne and even offered the guests some ecstasy from tiny little bowls. It was about half an hour later when Connor and Kerry appeared and sat down with them on the upper deck.
“So, what are you two doing here in Cannes and what do you do for a living? If you don’t mind me asking,” Connor said, trying to be friendly but clearly trying to impress Marianne.
Julian told him the story of how they were both currency traders and after being made redundant, decided to take a few months out, see Europe and maybe find something more interesting or challenging to do.
“I see, so you’re looking for something challenging and profitable, yes…?”
Looking at each other, Julian and Marianne were both in agreement so immediately replied yes.
“Well, maybe this is fate as I have… Err, let’s just say, I’m into import export and could do with a couple of new couriers.”
“Couriers…!” Julian exclaimed.
“Yeah, you could make 10 grand per trip so that’s 20 grand if you both go for it, travelling separately of course.”
“So, what exactly would we be carrying…?”
“Diamonds, uncut diamonds in a false bottomed, wheel on suitcase.”
“Diamonds! and what happens if we are caught…?”
“First offence, maybe probation or a couple of years and be out in 6 months to a year but it’s very rare to get caught and extremely profitable, one trip a week is forty grand a month each.”
Julian was in deep thought as he didn’t want to do anything illegal but Marianne was so excited and asked Connor,
“So, how many trips can we do in a year…?”
“I suggest once a week but only from different airports as the authorities get very suspicious if you are seen travelling regularly. However, I have couriers in several counties and have a shipment coming in from South Africa next week.”
Marianne grabbed Julian’s hand and said that 25 trips would be 250,000 and if they both did it, they could make 500,000 Euros. Julian was still unsure but agreed it was far more than any other business he knew about except for currency trading but without any capital, it could take well over a year to build it up.
“OK, so assuming that we agree, how exactly does it work…?”
“Easy, I pay for your flights, you meet my contact in Johannesburg, he will give you the suitcases and you fly home, on arrival, you go to a hotel, one of my employees will collect the cases and hand you the cash.”
“So, what if they scan the suitcase and then open it up…?”
“The consignment is sealed in a secret compartment and don’t show up on their radar easily as they are primarily looking for weapons or drugs.”
Staring at Marianne, Julian could tell she wanted to do it, so he told Connor they’d think about it and get back to him later. Connor got up and walked away with Kerry who gave them a strange raised eyebrows look.
Marianne was well excited and told Julian, it could be the answer they were looking for but did wonder why Kerry was acting strangely.
“I need another drink,” Julian said, pulling Marianne up and walking down the steps to the main lounge. Grabbing another two glasses, little did they know but the Champaign also contained ecstasy and about fifteen minutes later, they were both now feeling the euphoric effects.
