Prologue
It was a beautiful sunny day and I had decided to take the train into London. I’d been looking for a job for months but being only eighteen and just finished college with no experience, it was impossible. Add to that, we live in Witney Green, a small village in the middle of nowhere and my mum’s new boyfriend coming on to me all the time! I really needed to get away and find a flat but with no job and no money I was becoming more and more depressed by the day.
That’s when I met Ronnie, he was sitting next to me on the train and began talking to me.
Chapter 1
Ronnie
He was quite friendly and looked like a businessman, I assumed in his late forties. He must have guessed that I was upset, me staring out the window as everyone else was staring at their phones.
May I sit here…?” He asked politely.
“Yes of course,” I replied and went back to staring out the window.
It was another 45 minutes to Kings Cross and the train was almost full. I could sense him watching me as he pretended to read his newspaper but then he put it away and pulled out his phone. I assumed he was checking his emails but a few minutes later, he aimed it at what I assumed was the view of the countryside and took a picture. I must have also been in the picture because I was near the window and he was sitting in the aisle seat.
“Beautiful view,” he said smiling.
I didn’t reply but smiled back and continued gazing out at the countryside.
“Sorry to be bold but are you OK? You look a little worried or concerned,” he asked.
Looking back at him, I didn’t know what to say but simply shrugged my shoulders and said,
“Not really, I’ve been looking for a job and need to find somewhere to live.”
“I see, so is that why you’re going to London, to find a job…?”
“I don’t know to be honest, even if I did find a job, I can’t afford to travel into London everyday.”
“Yes, I understand, the train fares in England are ridiculous, I lived in the Far East and transport is very cheap.”
“Really…!” I replied, trying not to be rude, I wasn’t in the mood for talking to strangers.
“Yes, the buses and trains are very reasonable and the locals use jeepney’s which are only twenty pence to go miles. May I ask what sort of work you’re looking for…?”
“Anything really, I’ve just finished college and was hoping to get into hotels and hospitality.”
“Well, there are plenty of hotels in London.”
“Yes but I sent my CV to about eighty hotels and didn’t even get an interview…!”
“Oh dear, maybe its because people aren’t travelling so much after all the lockdowns and hotels have been hit very hard.”
“Yes I know, most of them didn’t even answer but the few that did said, they weren’t recruiting at the moment.”
He was silent for a good five minutes and then said,
“Maybe, I can help you out, are you looking for part time or full time work…?”
“Anything really, but it depends where it is, what sort of work is it…?”
“Well, I live in Chipping Ongar and have been thinking of getting a housekeeper.”
“Really, I live in Witney Green…!”
“What a coincidence! Witney Green is only a few miles from me, let me give you my number and if you’re interested, give me a call tomorrow morning.”
I couldn’t believe my luck as he handed me his business card. The train arrived at Kings Cross and everyone got up to disembark. The rest of the day was spent wandering around Covent Garden, watching the street performers and then I sat in Trafalgar Square, watching all the tourists milling around. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the man on the train. Looking at his business card, his name was Ronnie and it said he was a yacht broker with offices in the UK, Spain and Greece. I’d never been so excited and couldn’t get to sleep, wondering what sort of house he had and why his wife wasn’t looking after his house and did he have any children?
First thing in the morning I called him up.
“Hello, this is Abigail, you said to call you if I was interested in your housekeeping job.”
“Ah yes, Abigail, what a lovely name, I was hoping you’d call, so would you like to pop over and we can discuss it further…?”
“OK, so how do I get to Chipping Ongar, I don’t think there are any buses are there…?”
“Well, there are but they go around all the villages and I don’t know the times or anything, look, just call up a taxi and I’ll pay him when you arrive. Don’t worry about getting home, I can drive you or get another taxi. Give me your number and I’ll text you the address…”
