Where do your stories come from?
That’s a very interesting question that I’ve been asked many times…
Most of my first 50 odd stories are based on actual events or situations that I’d encountered over the years….
But what I and I’m assuming.. many other writers find is this..
When I start writing a new “fictitious story” … It actually takes on a life of it’s own…
I may start with a general idea or plot but nothing is planned out in advance…
I never plan out a beginning – middle – or end… like most writing courses teach us to do…
In fact.. I HAVE NO IDEA what is going to be revealed in the story…
Sometimes I cannot wait to start writing because even I WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT… and at other times, I don’t feel like writing… Because I’m not in the flow… That’s usually when I’ve finished a book and waiting for a new story-line to come into my head.
Sometimes I may get what many writers refer to as “writers block…”
But I find that if, I re-read the story or even just the last chapter… The story and words start to flow again.
Another strange time is when I start writing at say 10 o’clock in the morning… And I’m still writing at midnight and have hardly stopped… not even to eat… it’s like, once the flow starts… I don’t want it to stop…
For example “Japanese Escort” was not the original idea for that book… The actual basic idea was a story about an encounter with a friend of the wife… I had no idea at the beginning that she was going to be Japanese or an escort… All that (everything in the story) came into my mind as the story flowed through my head.
Another recent book that I had no idea what was going to happen or even who the characters were going to be was “Living on a boat“. IT WAS SO EXCITING – I was like YOU the reader being sucked into the story as if it was an actual real event.
THOUGHTS ARE THINGS
I have learned and come to understand over the years… That You or We… are not actually creating our thoughts… They are actual things that come from somewhere else… Our brains or minds are in simple terms… receiving stations… We all receive thoughts and ideas… Some people act on them and some do not… A crazy person will act on all kinds of stuff… He either thinks “Some higher power or whatever” is telling him to do things… Or he / she thinks “they” are creating the voices in their heads… That they are creating the thoughts themselves…
Writing is like creating music.. If flows through the mind of the recipient.
I remember when I used to do a lot of public speaking in front of sometimes 100’s of people… I would start off with a few notes of subjects I wanted to cover but… once I started talking and pacing around on the stage… It was like… I was watching myself talking… I USED TO BE THINKING TO MYSELF AS I WAS TALKING. .. Where is all this stuff coming from…? It was like I was a conduit…
Did you know that when an inventor invents a new product… And tries to patent that new product… that HE thought.. HE invented it in his own mind.. BUT… Several other people had also received that original thought or idea…
IN FACT- many people “received” the idea…
Some simply thought.. Hey what a good idea but didn’t act on it…
And some people thought… That’s a great idea and may start to act on it but stop because life gets in the way…
THEN A FEW PEOPLE actually create something from the idea.
What this process proves is.. that thoughts are coming to us from somewhere else… They are not generated in our heads…
